The Day of the Jackal

Cannes serves as a temporary refuge and communications point for The Jackal during his journey through France. At the Hotel Majestic, he makes a call that reveals the danger surrounding his operation; after listening to Valmy, he pays and drives away, carrying the newly received information onward.

Arrival at the Hotel Majestic

Just after eleven in the morning, The Jackal drives into central Cannes and, looking for a place suited to discreet business, chooses the Hotel Majestic. His light suit and confident manner lead staff to take him for an English gentleman. He asks a bell-hop where the telephone booths are, then requests a connection to Paris. The lobby is quiet, and the switchboard operator directs him to a soundproof booth.

The surrounding resort setting suggests the kind of life he has spent years trying to reach: expensive hotels, smart cars, elegant clothes and leisure by the sea. Yet the hotel is not simply a backdrop to luxury. Its public foyer gives him cover, while the booth provides privacy for a call on which his next decisions depend.

The Call to Valmy

The Jackal identifies himself to Valmy over the telephone. Valmy replies that they have been trying to reach him for two days. The conversation lasts about ten minutes; The Jackal mostly listens, occasionally asking a terse question. Seen through the booth’s glass, he stiffens and frowns, but nobody is watching closely: the operator is absorbed in a romantic novel.

That contrast makes Cannes a point of exposure as well as concealment. The Jackal is in a visible hotel, yet the ordinary distractions of its staff leave his exchange unobserved. When the call ends, the operator calculates the charge from the switchboard meter, and he pays it with a large tip.

Departure and Narrative Significance

After settling the bill, The Jackal leaves the Hotel Majestic, climbs into his Alfa, and heads away from Cannes into the heart of France. The stop therefore marks a transition from contact to movement: Valmy’s news reaches him in a sheltered, apparently uneventful setting, but the call’s urgency follows him onto the road. Cannes is a brief waypoint, not a destination, and its polished resort atmosphere stands in sharp contrast to the pursuit closing around him.
